The city was founded in 1648, and is the oldest city in Paraná, as a result Paranaguá has a very diversified historic centre in solidarity with the native groups who previously occupied the land. In the nearby bay manta ray, the largest in the world, are frequently known to be found, the only place where this has been recorded.
