This is a fine art print of the original watercolour & ink painting of Donkeys working on the island of Saint Helena. The donkeys were first recorded brought to the island for carrying goods in 1709. The donkeys were extensively used in the Flax Industry and were also used to power the Ladder Hill Railway, the donkeys are said to be able to make their way to and from the towns on their own thanks to their incredible memory. The population of donkeys remained high through the 1900s as they supported business on the island, with numbers reaching a peak of 1,161 in September 1955.
